The event 'Preparing and calculating payroll' includes 3 sessions that can be attended either separately or together.

The course goes through the process of preparing and calculating payroll and includes the controls needed and the prechecks necessary to make sure correct data is used. The course enforces the knowledge of controls and proper processes in the workflow to achieve better efficiency in the department.

In the first session, we will explain the different types of employment and contracts and a brief introduction of the payroll preparation process, explaining the different types of tax rates and social security contributions. We will also go through the end of year submission process and the termination of an employment contract.

Session 2

In the second session, we will go in detail on how the Maltese tax system operates, tax deductions are calculated monthly together with the monthly social security contributions calculations. Moreover, we will review the fringe benefit guidelines explaining the different fringe benefits and any exemptions that my apply. Finally, we will close off the session by reviewing the payroll accounting.

In the final session, we will review in detail the essentials of employment law and any legislation that effects the payroll processes.

Christian Sammut Christian joined Grant Thornton in 2016, after completing his Advanced and Intermediate level exams and obtaining the Advanced Matriculation Certificate. He is now in the final stages of obtaining his accounting qualification with the Association of Chartered Certified of Accountants, having passed the Strategic Business Reporting module and the Strategic Business Leadership module with two remaining exams to be sat for. During his time at Grant Thornton, Christian has gained diverse experiences and exposures with the Transaction Advisory Services and the Business Risk Services departments before joining the Business Process Solutions team in 2020. He was trusted on secondment to HSBC Malta for almost two years, in which period he was responsible to support the finance department with various accounting responsibilities. In 2021, he was promoted to Lead Associate, and is currently leading the payroll team, having an exposure to various industries and assists clients with setting up the payroll function, overseeing the payroll process as well as providing support with any technical queries. Christian continuously keeps abreast with payroll-related updates by attending various seminars on the subject topic. Christian is currently registered as a student with the Malta Institute of Accountants and ACCA.
