Practical accounting for beginners

Grant Thornton Advance Training is holding a series of training tackling accounting for beginners. The sessions will be split into three individual sessions of 3 hours each whereby they will be delving into the basic rules of accounting.

Session 1

The first session ‘Practical accounting for beginners- Bookkeeping’ will start off with a basic introduction on accounting and the founder of accounting. The session will mainly focus on the double entry system, explaining in detail the simple double entry, the origin of the double entry, the accounting equation and its importance in accounting and finally the trial balance. The session will finish off with practical examples of the double entry and how to prepare a final trial balance which will eventually be used to build up the company’s financial statements.

The second session ‘Practical accounting for beginners– Preparation of Financial Statements’ will go into detail on the financial statements. We will kick off the session with discussing the users of the financial statements, we shall then go through the national legislation and the legal requirements when it comes to preparing financial statements. We will also be discussing the accounting concepts and their importance such as the materiality concept, the going concern and prudence concept. The session will skim through the International Accounting Standards (IASs) and the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs). Finally, we will go through the formatting of the financial statements including the profit or loss, statement of financial position, statement of changes in equity and the cash flow statement.

The third session ‘Practical accounting for beginners – Analysis of Financial Statements’ will go through the concepts of the financial statements by delving into the director’s report, director’s responsibilities, and the auditor’s report. We shall also be going through the audit process and the exemptions when it comes to the preparation of financial statements by identifying what would classify a company as small, medium, or large. The session will finish off with a discussion of the most utilized accounting ratios which are used to analyse the financial statements.
