Malta secured a coveted second place in the latest survey amongst expats gaging their satisfaction of life abroad.
The survey conducted by InterNations, the world’s largest network for people who live and work abroad, asked 14,300 expats, representing 174 nationalities and living in 191 countries or territories, to rate 43 different aspects of life abroad on a scale of 1-7. The survey asked expats to rate several elements to their living experiences, such as career prospects, quality of life, attitude of the local population, working hours, and even weather.
Malta was voted as Europe’s favourite destination for those looking to relocate, thanks to the ease of settling in, low language barrier, low cost of living and enviable weather. The islands also placed fifth in terms of ‘personal safety and security’
Another sub-index covered by the survey was the Cost of Living, where the data was based solely on the ratings given by respondents to the general cost of living in their respective country of residence, also on a scale of 1-7. Malta leaped up the top of the list this year and secured the fifth place. It is worth nothing that not a single respondent said they were completely dissatisfied with their personal finances, meaning they were happy with the balance between money coming in and money going out on the cost of living. With 300 days of sunshine, its natural beauty and friendly locals, it is easy to understand why Malta is a popular destination with expats, as well as holiday makers.
Those looking at work options will also find good opportunities. Suffice to say that the share of foreign workers in the labour force has more than doubled between 2008 and 2016, with Italians, Britons and Spaniards topping the tables. According to Joe Farrugia, director general of the Malta Employers’ Association, the indications are that the rising demand for labour by local industries cannot be serviced by the supply of Maltese. A number of niche industries are also nourishing in Malta with gaming, aviation and financial services being industry leaders.
