Grant Thornton sets up new member firm in Libya

With dramatic changes across the Libyan political landscape there is now an opportunity for Grant Thornton to establish and build a strong presence in a country that is tipped to be one of the world's fastest growing economies over the next five years. With the support of Grant Thornton Malta, who are taking responsibility for quality control, risk management and training, the Libyan firm will operate under the name of Badi Chartered Accountants and Auditors and provide audit, tax and advisory services. Grant Thornton Malta will also have a Libya desk within their firm to further support existing or prospective clients having operations in Libya.

Badi Chartered Accountants and Auditors, which has been operating for more than 40 years, is led by Hakem Badi and brings two directors and seven members of staff operating from two offices in Tripoli and Benghazi. The firm has a strong reputation in eastern Libya and is particularly well known to foreign engineering and construction companies in Germany, Italy and eastern Europe. They also have excellent knowledge of Libya's unique tax and social insurance compliance institutions and traditional Libyan accounting practices.

Mark Bugeja, managing partner of Grant Thornton Malta, who is leading the Maltese project team said, "The Libyan market for assurance, tax and advisory services is expected to surge. Apart from assurance and tax for local compliance, there will be sustained demand for financial reporting to international companies with operations in Libya and, more lucratively, public sector demand for specialist advisory services. The existence of a credible member firm in Libya presents many opportunities for Grant Thornton globally."

Hakem Badi said, "We have worked mainly with international companies and as a result have been able to build a strong reputation across a number of countries in Europe, as well as in Libya itself. By joining Grant Thornton we hope to be able to position ourselves to capitalise on the expected influx of investment and build on our strong reputation so we are recognised as a real alternative to the Big 4."
