Microsoft Excel is the most commonly used spreadsheet application. Microsoft Excel training is a training program that provides a practical approach to learn and understand the capabilities that Microsoft Excel can offer for the day-to-day use of Accountants and other professionals.

During our course we will delve into the various functions and applications that Microsoft Excel has to offer. Such functions and applications are listed in the ‘Training Topics’ section. These functions and applications will be covered
by the speakers in the form of practical workshops and at the end of the session, participants will be asked to complete a case study based on the different topics that would have been covered throughout the session.

Module 1: Beginner

• Introducing Microsoft Excel and practical use cases
• Tool bar explanation
• Using shortcuts to navigate Excel
• Introductory formulas such as SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT functions
• Introducing basic functions and formulas, such as filtering, sorting, freezing and grouping of cells
• Using formatting to present the data in line with the users’ preferences


Learning objectives:
• Work comfortably with Microsoft Excel 2016 and many of its features
• Be much quicker at carrying out regular tasks
• Use functions that will improve the quality of your work
• Be able to apply learned concepts in practical day-to-day use

 

Module 2: Intermediate

• Dynamic formulas such as IF, IFS, AND, OR functions
• Use of pivot tables and conditional formatting
• Date formulas
• Use of VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP
• Other functions such as text-column function, autofill and flashfill
• Number manipulation, text manipulation and text cleaning functions
• Creating a chart on excel (line chart, pie chart etc.)

Learning objectives:
• Master the basics of Microsoft Excel
• Use sophisticated functions that will improve the quality of your work
• Be much quicker at carrying out regular tasks

• Make use of data tables and goal seek functions
• Preparation of loan schedules
• Calculation of Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR)
• Automation of repetitive tasks using macros

• Build a solid understanding on the Basics of Microsoft Excel
• Learn the most common Excel functions used in the office
• Maintain large sets of Excel data in a list or table
• Harness the full power of Microsoft Excel by automating your day-to-day tasks

Andrew Wait
Executive - Transaction Advisory Services
Andrew Wait

Andrew is an Executive at Grant Thornton engaged in the Transaction Advisory Services, a department specialising in corporate finance. He holds a Masters degree in Accountancy from the University of Malta. He has submitted a dissertation titled “Crowdfunding as an Alternative Source of Finance for Maltese Local Councils” in part-fulfilment of the degree. Andrew joined the advisory team on a full-time basis in July 2018. Within the team, his work primarily involves economics and corporate finance related projects. Consequently, he has worked on various market research, product development costings, economic impact assessments, risk analyses and business plans for private sector clients. He is also involved in the preparation of financial feasibility studies for private sector clients whilst also assisting government entities with financial feasibility studies and cost-benefits analyses for several projects, including the Malta Aviation Masterplan. Furthermore, he is also involved in supporting the drafting of Company Admission Documents for clients listing on Prospects MTF, a multi-lateral trading platform operated by the Malta Stock Exchange. In November 2020, Andrew commenced with working on compliance and internal audit related projects, both for private and public sector organisations. During his time at Grant Thornton, he was seconded for five months to the Malta Gaming Authority and two months to STC, where he assisted with process documentation and general accounting processes respectively.

Bernard Ellul
Advisory Team
Bernard Ellul

Bernard presently forms part of the Advisory team at Grant Thornton Malta. Having pursued his studies at the University of Malta, he majored in Accountancy and Economics as part of a Bachelor of Commerce course. He went on to further his studies in Accountancy, graduating with a Master in 2018. His dissertation, titled 'Healthcare Systems in Europe and their Relevance to Malta: A Comparative Analysis’, is currently under peer review at Public Money and Management and the Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting & Financial Management. After graduating, Bernard joined up with Grant Thornton, where he predominantly focuses on business plans, feasibility studies, valuations and carrying out financial due diligence exercises for a diversified portfolio of Maltese and overseas clients. He is also routinely roped in to assist the Economic Advisory team with a variety of engagements. During his time with the firm, Bernard has been responsible for the design and execution of a long-term data monitoring and assessment project with Primary Healthcare; the development of a research contribution mechanism from importers, distributors and producers of medical cannabis in Malta; as well as multiple feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses.
